Since its inception in 1994, this event has attracted over a thousand
job seekers each year. The idea of a Community Job Fair grew out of a concern
for the workers affected by the closure of Fort Ord in 1994. Representatives of
the Fort Ord Civilian Personnel Office, the Army Career and Alumni Program, the
Employment Development Department and other local agencies had been meeting to
develop a plan to assist the dislocated workers when the idea for a job fair
surfaced.
These agencies formed the Job Fair Committee with the goal of linking the
community with qualified and available resources affected by the downsizing of
several large agencies in Monterey County, and to provide the employer community
with immediate access to a diversified applicant pool of well qualified and
motivated persons eager to work. From the onset, the idea was to host a no-cost
event for both job seekers and employers.
After many meetings, much planning on the part of the committee members, and
with tremendous support from the local community, the first Community Job Fair
was held on March 2, 1994. The event turned out to be such a Hugh success that
the group of agencies committed to making it an annual event.
Thank You! to our current committee members/sponsors: the Monterey County
One-Stop Career Center System, Monterey County Hospitality Association, Central
Coast Human Resources Association, Monterey Marriott, Monterey County Weekly,
Shoreline/Goodwill Industries, Trucksis Flag and Banner and the Employment Development Department.
A special thanks, as well, to the City of Monterey and the Monterey Conference Center for providing a beautiful and much appreciated location for the event to take place.
